The Venetian Causeway is set to reopen on Monday, February 29th after 9 months of construction. The vital thoroughfare connecting Miami Beach to the mainland closed on June 1st of last year and forced cyclists, pedestrians, and motorists onto the busier MacArthur and Julia Tuttle Causeway.
"The project cost nearly $12 million and consisted of the replacement of bridge’s westernmost portion. Approximately 730 feet of superstructure and substructure were removed and replaced with a new complete bridge superstructure and substructure, along with a new approach roadway and lighting. The removed parts of the old bridge were submerged to create an artificial reef."
Plenty of locals are very excited about the reopening of the Venetian Causeway, below are a few activities taking place on Monday in celebration of the event.
- Ribbon cutting ceremony for the re-opening of the West Venetian Bascule Bridge at 11am with Miami-Dade County officials.
- Café at Books & Books (Arsht Center) is offering $1 tropical, veggie, or energy juice smoothies to anyone who stops by on their bicycle any time Monday!
- The Miami Cycling League is hosting a ride starting at The Miami Bike Shop (18th & Biscayne) at 5:30pm Monday evening. The group will ride to Miami Beach and back over the Venetian Causeway and finish at The Corner around 7pm for happy hour.
- Several clubs will be running on the Venetian Causeway between 6-7pm, one group will be starting on Miami Beach at 6pm and another on the mainland at 6:30pm.
