The Broward County Parks and Recreation Division’s Special Populations Section
is seeking volunteers for a Tandem Bike Skill Development Program which is designed
for adults who are blind and visually impaired.

Bicyclists who are blind or visually impaired are paired with sighted volunteers on tandem bicycles (bicycles built for two riders) to form a partnership. Participants learn basic biking skills, safety, bicycle mechanics, trust building, and group riding etiquette. The program also provides adults who are blind or visually impaired with opportunities for physical activity, fun, fitness, and social interchange.

In tandem partnership, the volunteer captains the front seat while the individual who is blind or visually impaired sits in the rear in the stoker position. Tandem partners are matched based on their strengths and weaknesses to complement each other. Both captain and stoker are equally important to the partnership. We meet for five consecutive weeks 1x per week for two hours. We have not determined the start date yet.

WHO: Adults, 18 and over

HOW: Consistent attendance is required in order to participate.
